Since 1976, The Hospitals of Providence Sierra Campus has been proudly caring for patients in the heart of El Paso. The Sierra Campus recently celebrated its 50th anniversary of providing patient care, medical innovation, and service to the region.

The Hospitals of Providence Sierra Campus, formerly known as Sierra Medical Center, proudly opened its doors on February 9, 1976, in the area historically coined as “Pill Hill,” due to the concentration of medical providers in the area. Since inception, the Sierra Campus has played a vital role in the region’s healthcare landscape, expanding access to care and leading the way in advancements for the community.

“Fifty years is more than a milestone - it represents countless lives touched, countless challenges overcome, and countless lives saved,” said David Byrd, Chief Executive Office for The Hospitals of Providence Sierra Campus. “We honor and celebrate the physicians, nurses and staff – past and present – who have dedicated themselves to caring for our community. We remain proud to care for the families who have placed their trust in us for generations.”

Over five decades, the Sierra Campus has paved the way in advancements, earning recognition for its exceptional, high-quality care in cardiology, neurology and orthopedics. Recognized as the region’s only HeartCARE Center, as well as a Comprehensive Stroke Center, and a Certified Total Joint Center, the Sierra Campus has remained at the forefront of advanced, lifesaving care – introducing new technology and procedures for the Borderland Region.

The community celebration included unveiling a history wall inside the hospital — highlighting the five decades of innovation and care – and a special commemorative art piece by local artist, Patrick Gabaldon.
